Primary discussion of this issue has centered around the question of the secularization of the modem world, especially regarding the displacement of one institution of knowledge production (religion) by another (science). However, although agreement over secularization remains far from settled (Hamilton, 1995), the view of 20th century culture as rationalized and disenchanted is nonetheless widely taken for granted. One consequence of this—perhaps also stemming from Weber’s (1948) discounting of the relevance of public knowledge of science—is that what is now called the public understanding of science, however defined, has been largely bypassed as an issue of concern.

And this type of technical action has itself become realizable within modernity, because of certain accidents of history converging to produce the process of rationalization. There is, then, for Weber, an intimate interconnection between science and modernity understood in terms of the progressive domination of a particular type of action and mode of consciousness, characterized by its technical form. This leads him to the notion of intellectualist rationalization, or disenchantment It is not my intention to debate the adequacy of this proposed resolution in relation to Weber himself.

Unless they are capable of recognizing these characterizations, and of knowing them to be deliberately partial and specially chosen, they are unlikely to appreciate the humor (though whether they find it especially funny or not is another matter). Thus, there is a shared discourse of science within modem culture. , 1988). This book is a first attempt to chart the workings of this dilemma, through the application of the DA perspective to the case of creation science. The rest of this chapter further discusses the methodological and theoretical issues outlined previously.
