101 Within two years, however, and after being re-adopted by the Conservatives (so as not to oust their own candidate), he was able to once again influence imperial matters when he was made Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1924. 103 Domestic stability was one of the three main tenets of his imperialism as a strong home economy, a superior (or at least equal) fleet, and strong international trade provided the British Empire with an aura of power and prestige. After all, confidence breeds confidence. 105 Churchill reverted to the age-old consolation that if there appeared to be no enemy to Britain in home waters (Germany had been temporarily defeated and was being economically punished in the Churchill’s British Empire 39 post-Versailles era), and should the British fleet be needed as far afield as Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, or New Zealand, it would not be a hardship to let the fleet go and defend empire’s honour.
