Emphatically, here I do not mean that discourse (and the discourse producer) is determined by some universal system of norms and values. It is not. Rather, discourse is oriented towards culturally specific norms and values (see also Back 1996: 11). From another perspective, discursive moral rationality comes from historically specific discourses. Consequently, valued ‘progress’, ‘development’ and ‘transformation’ of historical discourse are ‘positive’ only from culture-specific and contemporary perspectives.
